Your EndNote Library/enl file should be saved to your computer’s hard or C drive only; any other location is insecure and the file could be corrupted or lost. Do not use cloud services like OneDrive or Dropbox. Always synchronise [link to https://bradford.libanswers.com/faq/188446] your EndNote Library with your EndNote Online account [link to https://www.bradford.ac.uk/library/find-out-about/endnote/].

For a proper backup, create a compressed EndNote Library/enlx file (every month is recommended) and save it to a different location from your main Endnote Library. Compressed EndNote libraries are inherently secure and can be saved to most drives and web/cloud servers.

  1. Highlight the groups or references you want to backup. Choose the All References option and then press CTRL+A to select the whole Library;
  2. Click on File, and then Compressed Library (.enlx) …
  3. In the popup window, choose what you want to compress. Defaults are set for all references and attached pdfs (“File attachments”);
  4. Press Next. The compressed library will be created, and a file explorer window will open to enable you to save the new file.

Compressed Library (.enlx) files can be opened very simply by using the Open Library command in the EndNote desktop File menu. Once opened, .enlx files become normal .enl files in EndNote.
